Dear Neighbor:
Residents
living in Hartford are “Slaves of recession” The baseball stadium was a poor
idea for several reasons that are too many to mention at this time. However I feel that it is the Governments
responsibility to guarantee that “every individual …a right to make a comfortable
living." Economic security is a political condition of personal liberty.
I am not a preacher, teacher or an electrician...I just know that “a man or woman that does not work shall not eat”
…Poverty is a result of ethnic disparities and Social inequity’s created by Urban Renewal. Urban Renewal destroyed Hartford, Connecticut. Every non-profit, community leader, politician and religious organization has benefited from Urban Renewal….they just forgot about the people they were supposed to help.
From everywhere
one could think that the tree was ready for harvest. The branches appear to be
filled with ripe fruit, the branches are bent from the weight of the fruit, and
it bows to the pull of gravity. One can clearly see that the fruit is
developing in a variety of stages. Many are young; many are stunted in growth
from lack of maintenance, while others are ready for picking, others fall to
the ground forgotten. The tree is on fertile ground everywhere you look, wild
grass and dandelions encircles the tree, broken branches from previous storms,
hide in the tall grass, blending in with the fruit that has fallen from
previous seasons.
One may
wonder where the owner of the tree is.
I
know why the caged bird sings…Poverty is not self-inflicted
I don’t have
a blueprint for dealing with recession: I can only report what I see. I know why people stand on the block- I know why men and women worldwide
hug the corners… I know that a man or woman that does not work shall not
eat clearly the citizens of Connecticut are suffering from post traumatic stress-secondary to
being unemployed and ignored. Upon visual assessment you can see people in a
state of confusion: depression and desperation has allowed the people to become
followers of any leader.
Young people
between the ages of twenty-five and forty have been born and reared in a
different world- the television has become the primary baby sitter from the
television set they have learned situation ethics and immorality – they have
learned to disrespect the family as God has established it. They have learned a
loss of respect for human life.
When the
City of Hartford, Connecticut takes the lead in developing economic solutions that address
the needs of ordinary citizens... then I will sit down and shut up
, because I have been shut down.
Martha Hood PhD reporting from a neighborhood near you, Hartford is hungry, high and neglected.
